Needlework is any type of craft that is done with a needle and thread. Some needlework is used to adorn other handywork, like embroidery on a dress, or a crochet collar on a blouse. Regular embroidery was used to put pretty designs on table cloths and pillow cases, among other items. Machine embroidery has become popular, but it did not take the place of hand made needlework. There are still many people worldwide who choose to do this hobby by hand.
Cross stitch and counted cross stitch are two forms of needlework that are very popular today and are good crafts for the beginner. Needlepoint and petite point are needlework on a special kind of fabric that makes tiny stitches to make a design. Knitting, crocheting, crewel embroidery and plastic canvas are part of the needlework network, each an art in itself. Lace making is possibly one of the finest needlework projects there is, alongside tatting. Intricate laces are made by hand through this needlework craft.
There are different needles for different needlework. The needles used for the different types of embroidery can be fine for the regular embroidery and larger for the heavier yarns used in crewel embroidery. Knitting needles and crochet hooks have no eye, but they are needles just the same, and are used to make needlework. If you do not have a teacher for your craft, you can find craft books for every type of needlework. This can open up a whole new world to your craft endeavors.
