Crafts and Better Health

When a human being creates something with his or her own two hands, a number of things take place physiologically and emotionally. Science has even proven this to be true by studying people who do crafts on a regular basis compared to those who do not. Crafts usually involve using your mind quite a bit; studies have shown that those who exercise their minds regularly are less likely to have symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Most crafts involve using your fingers a great deal, and this has shown to be very beneficial in keeping them limber and minimizing pain due to arthritis.

Not only does crafting help keep your mind sharp by exercising both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously, and keep your joints limbered up, but it has also been proven to have a calming affect, much like meditation and yoga do. Learning something new has a way of keeping life interesting, and giving something to someone that you have made yourself has a tendency to give you a little more self-worth. There is also a great deal of benefit on the social level if you take classes or do your craft with a group of people. Human beings were created as social beings, and when we make it a point to get out and socialize, it has a way of improving our entire being.

If you have not gotten involved in doing a craft, there are a multitude that you can choose from. Some of the most well-known crafts would be knitting, crocheting, sewing, painting, drawing, and woodworking. But let’s not forget things like baking, gardening, music, etc. All of these crafts have a tendency to improve your health and mental capacities when done on a regular basis.
