Handmade items are usually treasured by the receiver, no matter if it is a gift or a decoration. There are many ideas for Christmas, from balls for the tree, or swags for over the door or the fireplace. Yule logs are a nice centerpiece for the table. You could also make a small plastic horn with a few poinsettia blooms and some pine greenery hung by a ribbon on the door.
Have the kids help make something for a gift or two. Grandma doesn't need anymore perfume, so why not give her a nice gift of bulbs (flowers to bloom) in a decorated pot, made with some Christmas fabric. A crochet lap robe or shawl for cold drafts would surely be appreciated. How about a couple of decorated coasters made from the large food jar lid for next to the bed or TV chair.
If you just want to decorate something, try making napkin rings using pony beads strung on elastic thread. Maybe someone would like a scrapbook of the pictures of the whole family or pictures of old times and good memories. This is something that everyone would enjoy for years to come. You could make one for each member of the family with only their pictures in it. Recycle last years Christmas cards to make new ones. Assuming you have saved your old cards, for whatever reason, cut out the pretty pictures and glue them onto a folded piece of construction paper and write a little verse inside.
Make a Christmas pomander with whole cloves stuck into an orange. This is one the kids can make without supervision and they smell so good. Then, wrap it once with a thin piece of Christmas ribbon and hang it anywhere.
